amywonder: hello! so i got a new tattoo today.. a lack of a camera battery means a bad quality webcam photo but i’m sure you’ll get the basic impression. it’s vignette by aubrey beardsley, an illustration from le morte d’arthur.

In transparent overlay, two times have become as one, and we are meant to be equally aware of both dictions (and yet they seem the same diction). The words lie flat like the forms on a Cubist surface. The archaizing sensibility of James’s time and Beardsley’s has simply dissolved.

Production designer Natacha Rambova based much of Salome’s decor and costumes on the decadent illustrations Aubrey Beardsley produced for the first edition of Oscar Wilde’s play Salome.
